My Ilocano grandmother and Visayan mother agreed to name me Gloria after the song Gloria In Excelsis Deo. My father, a United Press International messenger in his teens, gave me his surname Esguerra; and my journalist cum jack-of-all-trades husband lent me his Melencio.
Renamed from my former blog Straight from the Hearth (mula sa kusina in Filipino), The Herstorian (Tagasalaysay) tackles any topic under the sun. The Filipino word tagasalaysay is non-sexist and embodies the Philippine culture that believes in men and women as both strong and dependable.
I am a journalist. I also give lectures and workshops about writing, history and gender.
